How do the outcomes impact Premier League matches?

Three fixtures in Matchweek 34 have been postponed due to the semi-finals scheduled for the weekend of April 20-21. Manchester United’s home game against Newcastle, Chelsea’s away match at Brighton & Hove Albion, and Manchester City’s visit to Tottenham Hotspur will need to be rescheduled.

Amad settles epic cup tie

Mohamed Salah featured in Liverpool’s starting lineup alongside the return of Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, and Luis Diaz.

  • In an action-packed beginning to the match, Man Utd took the lead in the 10th minute when Scott McTominay capitalized on a rebound after Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher could only deflect Alejandro Garnacho’s shot.
Liverpool dramatically changed the course of the cup match with two goals towards the end of the first half.
  • First, Darwin Nunez set up Mac Allister, whose shot deflected off Kobbie Mainoo’s boot before finding the net.
  • Then, just before halftime, Nunez’s shot was saved by Andre Onana, but Salah capitalized on the rebound with a powerful finish.
  • Ten Hag brought on Antony, Amad, and Christian Eriksen from the bench to chase an equalizer. With three minutes left, Antony spun inside the box and scored past Kelleher to level the score.
  • Both teams had late opportunities to win in regular time, with Liverpool’s Elliott hitting the post before Rashford narrowly missed from Eriksen’s precise pass.
  • In extra time, Liverpool regained the lead in the 105th minute when Elliott’s shot deflected off Eriksen and went through Maguire’s legs before finding the bottom-left corner of the net.

United quickly responded, leveling the score in the 112th minute with Rashford calmly slotting the ball into the bottom-right corner after being set up by McTominay.

Following a missed opportunity from McTominay, Amad intercepted Elliott’s pass deep in United’s half after a Liverpool corner.

Amad then surged forward after receiving a pass from Garnacho, entering the penalty area and switching the ball onto his left foot before directing a low shot into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Despite receiving a second yellow card for removing his shirt during his celebrations, Amad’s dismissal didn’t affect the outcome as United secured their spot in the semi-finals.

Late goals send Chelsea through

Mauricio Pochettino made two alterations from the team that defeated Newcastle 3-2 in the Premier League, with Robert Sanchez taking over in goal instead of Djordje Petrovic, and Mykhailo Mudryk replacing the suspended Enzo Fernandez. Ben Chilwell returned to the bench for Chelsea.

Chelsea grabbed the lead in the 14th minute as Marc Cucurella tapped in from close range after a pass from Nicolas Jackson.

The Blues had a chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Raheem Sterling by Abdul Fatawu. However, Sterling’s weak spot-kick was comfortably saved by Jakub Stolarczyk.

Pochettino’s team doubled their lead just before halftime when Sterling set up Cole Palmer to score from close range.

Leicester got back into the game in the 52nd minute when Axel Disasi’s backpass from 35 yards out, under pressure from Patson Daka, ended up in the net with Sanchez off his line.

Eleven minutes later, Stephy Mavididi equalized for Leicester with a shot into the far corner of the net.

Leicester’s chances suffered a setback when Callum Doyle was sent off for fouling Jackson, who was through on goal. Initially awarded a penalty and shown a yellow card, Doyle’s punishment was upgraded to a red after a VAR review, with the foul deemed to have occurred just outside the penalty area.

Chelsea sealed the win in stoppage time when Palmer’s clever flick was finished by Chukwuemeka through the legs of Stolarczyk.

Palmer has achieved the feat of both scoring and assisting in six separate matches for Chelsea across all competitions this season, the highest among any Premier League player in the 2023/24 season.

Five minutes later, Madueke embellished the scoreline by maneuvering past three defenders before elegantly curling a spectacular shot into the top-left corner.
